Chapter Eleven
Warm sunlight spilled into Keenan’s eyes as he blinked them open. He rolled over on soft sheets then immediately braced his head against the pounding in his temples. A wave of nausea bowled through his stomach at the piercing ache and he let out a long groan. His body reminded him of the morning after he’d drunk entirely too much alcohol with Rowan, yet he couldn’t recall doing that again. His mind was sluggish as he tried to remember what had happened.
“You’re awake.”
Dhani’s voice was loud in his ears. He cringed then turned to squint at his friend who was sitting in a chair beside his bed. His bed, he realized slowly. He was in his bedroom in the bungalow. How had he gotten there? The last thing he remembered was talking with Hael, then the urgent need to get to Rowan… Oh, shit! “Rowan!” He jerked upright, looking around frantically.
“It’s okay,” Dhani said as he moved to sit next to him and smooth back his tangled hair. “He’s fine. Everyone made it out alive. Well, everyone we know.”
A chill raced down Keenan’s spine. “What do you mean? What happened?”
“You tell me.” This time the gentleness in Dhani’s tone was replaced with anger. Dhani glared at him accusingly then stood and paced away from the bed with a huff. “I had stayed at Manning’s place to give you and Rowan some time alone then I came here last night to an empty house. Next thing I know, they’re carrying you in this morning with trails of blood coming from your nose, your mouth, your ears. Blood, Keenan! I thought you were dead. I thought I’d lost the only person in this world I care about.”
“Dhani—”
“Don’t ‘Dhani’ me!” he ground out, making a chopping gesture. His hazel eyes were glistening with unshed tears and his thin body vibrated. “They told me what you did. How could you run off and risk your life like that? How could you be so stupid and expose yourself? Rowan said there were close to three hundred minions at the site and you killed almost all of them within minutes. Your father will know it was you. It won’t be hard for him to figure out you’re being protected by Rowan and Manning. What if he comes looking for you here?”
“Hold on—” Keenan tried.
“You just don’t think! What if you had died? What would happen to me? I have no family, no home. I have nothing except you. I can’t lose you.”
The last words were stretched with painful emphasis. Shame cut into Keenan for putting his friend through this, but he couldn’t deny that he would do it again if he had to. Quietly, he said, “I had to save him.”
The anger seemed to deflate from Dhani as he wiped the moisture from his eyes. “I know. I would do the same for my…if I had a mate.”
Dhani cast his gaze downward and Keenan got the distinct feeling there was more going on with his friend than what he was telling him.
